Altea is a small town situated on the southside of Sierra Bernia mountains, between Valencia and Alicante on the east cost of Spain "Costa Blanca. The area around Altea has been inhabited for many thousands of years, with inhabitants such as Iberian tribes, Greeks, Phoenicians, Romans, and Arabs to name but a few. It was in fact the Greeks who are said to have given Altea its name; calling it Althaia (which means "I cure"), and naming the nearby river Algar which means "river of health". There are still parts in the Old town remaining from the middle ages.
The beautiful location in a valley protected by high and sharp mountains, made Altea attractive to north european tourists and artists allready in the 50th. People found inspiration in the dramatic nature, the old town on the hill and the surrounding fruitfarms. While many places on the spanish coast have been invaded by grouptourism and ugly buildingareas or skyscrapes, Altea has preserved its original character and atmosphere. Today Altea is well known as a cultural center and as a result of the big interest in art and music Altea now proudly presents the "Palau" a new concerthall together with the The university of Fine Arts. Lots of people visit Altea evry year and walk the streets of the Ancient town El Casco antiguo de Altea.
The beaches of Altea are white and beautiful and consist of small stones. Benidorm with its sandy beaches and amusement parks, is located only 8 km south from Altea.
  ALTEA: Enclavada en la comarca de la Marina Baixa, la ciudad de Altea se abre al mar desde una de las más hermosas bahías del Mediterráneo. Desde lo alto de un cerro, protegida de los vientos fríos por las montañas del interior, la población ofrece todo el encanto de los pueblos marineros del Mediterráneo. Altea se encuentra situada a 50 kilómetros de Alicante, 120 kilómetros de Valencia y a 10 kilómetros de Benidorm.
Monumentos y lugares de interés: Barrio de la Vellaguarda, Casco Viejo, Iglesia de la Virgen del Consuelo y Museo Navarro Ramón.
Playas: Altea tiene 6 km. de playa, alternando los acantilados con las zonas de baño de cantos rodados. Junto al casco urbano tenemos la Playa de la Roda. Hacia el sur la mayor playa, la de Cap Blanch, que se funde con la de Albir. Hacia el norte la Playa de Cap Negret, de gravilla, que acaba en una pequeña cala de piedra negra llamada Cala del Soio. Otra playa muy concurrida es la de L´Olla frente a la isleta de mismo nombre. Las playas de Altea acaban en la punta del Mascarat y la sierra de Bernia, donde hay calas de gravilla como la Barreta, La Solsida y La Galera.
Altea también tiene una Universidad de Bellas artes y "El Palau" un teatro de conciertos.
